All Hallow’s Eve has always been a favorite time of year for me.
Halloween has a long and colorful past.
November 1 is the beginning of the new year in Earth based spiritual paths. So October 31 became known as “Holy Eve” or “Hallowed Eve”. What we now know as Halloween.
These were Holy days to the ancient people. They thought their survival, prosperity and luck depended on doing things just right during these Holy Days and Nights.
The Ancients were very primitive and not very educated. That is why some of our customs got started with dressing up as goblins & ghosts!
The ancient people felt if someone had died during the previous year, that he or she was still in a bit of limbo land. They knew it was un-healthy to have spirits hanging around the living. Hallow’s Eve was known by the Druid Priests to be a natural crack between the worlds.
They followed the planets, tides and moon cycles. The priests knew the veil between the worlds was thin and we could see spirit and they could communicate with us easier than at other times of the year.
The priests thought this could be a problem and encouraged the common people to take measures to protect them selves, their homes and villages.
Fire was the major protection. They lit large bon-fires in the villages to scare away any wayward spirits.
The villagers would dress up as ghosts or spirits thinking if a real spirit came around them they would be fooled into thinking the living person was like them and they would be safe.
Since the Ancients were really worried about going into the winter with whatever crops they had brought in, making it through till spring was always a worry. They would consult gypsies, wise women, or the Druids to have them see if they had enough food on hand to be ok.
Fortune telling was huge in their lives – wondering who they would marry, how long they would live and if their ancestors on the other side were at peace. They did seances with seers & clairvoyants to communicate safely with family loved ones.
To make sure they were safe from being haunted, and that they could sleep in peace, on All Hallow’s Eve, they would place candles in the windows, using the element of fire to protect the home and vulnerable entry points.
They would make primitive altars (Altar of The Dead) with images that represented their loved ones so if they did get in, they would see that the family was respecting their memory.
A Feast of the Dead was held and each person who had died over the past year had a place at the table. Symbolically this was their way of saying we honor your memory and what you contributed to our living here.
Since Halloween is really the night that the veil is the thinnest, seances were very popular that night.
Seance is a French word that translates to “sit with spirit” or “sitting session with spirits”.
In my “Mediumship Seance” we sit together in a circle, the room is darkened so the clairvoyants can really focus on spirit.
The mediums relay names they get from the other side with messages that they get.
Before the seance we set up an “Altar of the Dead”. You can bring photos of special loved ones that you would like to hear from. Again this a way to acknowledge their memory. Our Altar is beautiful, filled with tea candles and fall flowers. It is a wonderful way of calling to our loved ones, saying “Hey, here I am. Please come and give me a message.”
After our seance we have our “Feast of the Dead”. Every one who comes brings a dish to share. I think it is best to bring a dish that your loved one liked in paticular. If your Grandmother loved apple cobbler, I would bring that. Even better if you use her recipe and pie plate if you have it.
We always have fun in the seance. It is held in light and love. I am very paticualr about only spirits of light who love us coming into the space.
