Self Hypnosis is a great tool that has been helping people create a new mindset for ages.
Each week I take a question off my Facebook Wall to answer here in this column.
This week Charles writes: How can I un-see the terrible things that I saw in war? I try to sleep and have horrific images popping up and wish I have never closed my eyes. Can you offer guidance?
Yes, Charles and thank you for your service !! They are a lot of tools that can be a huge help and I recommend self-hypnosis.
You have already been exposed to this and might not even realize it. A soldier is introduced very early on in their training to self-hypnosis techniques.
Hypnosis training is heavily used in your military education.
Every time you participate in a roll call you are being introduced and indoctrinated with hypnosis. In this way they are creating soldiers who listen to and respect authority for the purpose of creating a warrior mindset.
What do they teach you to say if you were ever a pow?? Name, Rank, Serial Number over and over again. This is another self-hypnosis technique to help you focus on something else if you were captured and tortured.
A Drill Sargent’s uses cadence chants as encouragement and inspiration to drive home a warrior state of mind, all using hypnosis strategies.
While a warrior mindset is useful in war, once a soldier comes home they need some reprogramming to create a new mindset that they can use to re-create their life a new.
Often they have to override the old programming and one way to do that is to use self hypnosis.
For those of you who were in service a long time and saw action, you may have to use some daily meditation/hypnosis sessions to help you focus on a new way of living your life.
If you saw action your survival glands were activated and released hormones to help you stay on high alert for days at a time. You need to turn them off for rest and recuperation so you can re-group. For a tenacious person, this is all doable
Self hypnosis is one way to approach this.
It helps to think of your brain as a computer that has been downloaded with files and software that helped you live through service and a war zone or two. This software and programming did it’s job and helped you survive.
Now it is time to download some new software that is perfect for this phase in your life.
There are several good books that have some self-hypnosis sections with simple ideas to help you go into a deep state of relaxation. I recommend ” Master Hypnosis” by Richard Thomas
You can record your session and then listen to it over and over again. Listen at night as you go to sleep.
Your basic formula is a progressive relaxation thought, then introduce the new idea, “and I like to introduce it as if I have it now”, then affirm this new state of being, and you can close with affirmations.
Because we make strides a little at a time, you might need to tweak your affirmations and re-do them from time to time.
You can apply self-hypnosis to many different challenges you have. Like weight loss, to stop smoking, to focus better, to remember a past life, to deepen a spiritual or romantic connection. The list goes on !!!
If you don’t feel confident to do this your self, find a good therapist/hypnotist to help you. They can inspire you with some basic and simple self-hypnosis thought processes to help you push past your challenge.
Bright Blessings
